HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care

The EMSET “Certificate IV in Health Care” is an entry level prehospital qualification which provides students with the first step to studying for a career as a medic.


The Certificate IV Health Care program introduces students to basic life support skills needed to work in the pre-hospital emergency environment as Basic Life Support (BLS)

Emergency Medical Technician.

The Certificate IV in Health Care qualification is accredited with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and covers work involving delivery of limited direct client care in an emergency response context. The qualification focuses on work in the ambulance industry undertaken by volunteers or workers who provide a basic emergency response and transport role in areas such as mines rescue, fire and rescue services, patient transport officers and industrial paramedics and emergency medical technicians.


About the Certificate IV Health Care (HLT41120) course


The Certificate IV in Health Care course provides students with the necessary skills and competencies to identify, assess and treat the clinical signs and symptoms of injured or ill patients. Students will be taught advance assessment techniques and gains skills in treatment, extrication and transportation.


EMS Education & Training provides a robust training methodology that blends, distant learning, didactic and practical sessions over 280 hours of intense study.


The course covers such subjects as anatomy and physiology, CPR, Advanced Resuscitation, Pharmacology, Infection Control policies and procedures, Manage routine scene and promote public safety and Transport emergency and non-emergency patients.

For those students that are currently enrolled or enrolling into the Certificate IV in Health Care and who will not have their studies completed by this date, you will be automatically transferred over to the new course code.

Please be aware that this transition may entail additional gap training in the form of theory questions/practical scenarios and this will be outlined to you in full as the transition date gets closer.

Entry requirements


  • Current First Aid Certificate (if you do not have a current first aid certificate we can assist you with enrolling into a first aid course)

  • Current and Valid Driver’s Licence

  • Reasonable level of physical fitness

  • Current Working with Children’s Check is Desirable

  • Current Criminal History Check

  • Proficiency in English and possess a sound level of literacy and numeracy


Course duration

The Certificate IV in Health Care course is a mixed learning course by distant learning for pre and post assignments, face to face didactic sessions and practical scenario based learning. Students must complete this course within 1 - 2 years of commencement.

EMS Education & Training guarantees to provide students with a dedicated work experience placement program through our sister company EMS Event Medical.


This placement program consists of attendance at special events and sporting fixtures and access to ongoing mentoring and senior paramedic support.


Students will gain a comprehensive understanding and experience related to the prehospital, event and entertainment services and have the opportunity to apply their learned skills in real life situations.
